  4.     DIED. Robert Motherwell, 76, founding member of the Abstract
  5. Expressionist school of American painting; of a stroke; in
  6. Provincetown, Mass. Motherwell was one of the few Abstract
  7. Expressionists who wrote lucidly about painting, which he once
  8. described as "a state of anxiety that is obliquely recorded in
  9. the inner tensions of the finished canvas." He was especially
  10. renowned for the series he painted from 1949 to 1976 known as
  11. Elegies to the Spanish Republic, a sequence of funereal images
  12. that evoke prison bars and bullfighters' hats. Lauding
  13. Motherwell's collages, TIME art critic Robert Hughes said he was
  14. "the only artist since Matisse in the '50s to alter
  15. significantly the syntax of this quintessentially modernist
  16. medium."
